I hired a car via broker Auto Europe 20/07/2020. My voucher mentioned Interrent as the local rental company in Alicante, Spain. When I reported at their desk in Alicante airport on 26/07/2020 at 9am, it was soon pretty clear that the employee wanted to sell us an extra insurance. She used pretty agressive selling tactics and spoke terrible English. As we were warned in advance by a friend with some car rental experience, we refused their "friendly offer".
When we received the car, a Seat Ibiza, everything seemed ok with the car, after a thorough check up.
When we returned the car two weeks afterwards, on sunday 09/08/2020 at 7am, as agreed and mentioned on the voucher, there was no Interrent employee on site. I had no other option than to drop the key in the key deposit box, and leave to check in at the airport. Luckily, I took enough pictures of the car after drop off, just in case. After all, no damage was made to the car during our stay in Spain.
When I checked my mailbox right before our plane taking off, I noticed a mail from Interrent. It seemed that Interrent checked the car - Where did the Interrent employee suddenly come from?!? - and reported double damage on the car: front left wing and rear bumper. They included some unclear pictures of the so called damage in the mail. I was absolutely sure we dropped the car in perfect condition, as we received it, without any damage. The mail reported that an amount of 350 euro would be charged to my credit card. I was furious and felt mugged.
The day after, 10/08/2020, I contacted Auto Europe by phone. After I explained my problem, the customer service employee confirmed me that I was insured for the damage, since I paid extra for the "restitution option". However, the insurance option was not applicable, since I dropped the key in the deposit box instead of giving the key to an Interrent employee. Did I have any other option at that time? No, I hadn't, since there was nobody there at that moment and since the opening hours mentioned that the Interrent desk would only open at 9am on sundays.
This kind of mafia policy makes me absolutely livid.
One piece of advice: DON'T USE INTERRENT, UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET SCAMMED!
